Titanfall 2 Review (PS4)

Story

Work together with your Titan to complete your mission.

You are pilot Jack Cooper, a militia man who is tasked to fight the enemy faction called IMC in the planet Typhon. During the mission, you have the control of a powerful Titan called BT-7274, a Vanguard Titan that is specialised in combat. You have the objective to complete the mission that was tasked to your captain, and it is your job to complete the mission with your Titan.

The story premise is interesting, set in a distant alien planet while fighting your enemies using your firearms and a Titan. It is an action-packed and straightforward story that is not complicated to players. The characters are not particularly memorable, except for the Apex Predator villains such as Kane and Blisk, where they have more exposure compared to the game's protagonist, Jack Cooper. BT has more interesting dialogues and personality compared to Jack, which is a bit of disappointment.

Gameplay

1) Singleplayer Section

Action packed first-person shooter campaign.

The singleplayer campaign is a new gameplay mode that was absent in the first Titanfall game. You will take control of Jack Cooper, and you must control him in the game. In many Missions in the game, you can also control the Titan BT to defeat your enemies.

This game is a first-person shooter game, but with good balance of shooting and platforming sections throughout the game that makes each mission different from each other. At most times, you will need to fight your way and kill off your enemies. There are many enemy types that you will encounter in this game, such as human soldiers, robots, and giant mechs called Titans.

In this game, there are different gameplay sections where you must explore on foot or when piloting your partner Titan. There are balanced amount of linear levels as well as open-ended levels, where you can explore to find collectibles or find alternative paths to your destination. Progression is rather simple, as you only need to go to your next destination, which can be pinpointed from your marker.

The controls are simple. The game is played in first-person view perspective, and you can do lots of neat actions such as wall-running, double jumps, and other actions. You may also fire your equipped weapon at your enemies, reload, and throwing grenades. There are other useful combat options that will be unlocked for you as you progress in the game.

Titan controls are similar to Cooper's controls, although there are certain differences. First of all, the Titan that you control has access to different preset loadouts, which may have different sets of weapons that fit different combat situations. They may be found as you explore in the game. Each loadout is unique, like one loadout allows you to use powerful laser attacks and other loadout allows you to use a giant sword. Not only that, each loadout has different abilities and ultimate attacks. You may find new loadouts as you progress in the singleplayer campaign.

There is also a good variety of enemies to be fought, such as human soldiers, Titans, and mechs. Many of them are dangerous when fought without any preparations, so you must choose your weapons wisely, take cover, and etc. Titan and pilot battles are similar, but depending on your progress you can't switch between the two modes while playing. The major highlights of the combat is the Titan boss fights, where you must fight enemy leaders that use specialised Titans that can defeat you easily.

2) Multiplayer Section

Compete with against other players online.

The game's main attraction is the online multiplayer mode, where you can play against other players online. There are many online match types that you can play, such as Attrition mode where it allows 6 vs. 6 team deathmatch where your team must score the most points to win the match, or Bounty Hunt mode where you must collect bounties by killing random targets and bank them in at certain machines.

Not only that, the game's multiplayer mode also features leveling system, where you can earn experience points by killing your enemies and winning matches. As you level up, you will have access to new weapons and Titans. You may also choose to create your own customised loadouts with different weapons, abilities, and Titan.

Combat remains the same, although this will be a total different experience as you will be fighting against real players online with different skill levels. Depending on how you perform, you can also summon a Titan for you to use.

3) Gameplay Conclusion

Excellent gameplay.

This game has excellent gameplay. Despite the short lengthened campaign, it is still a great experience to play with different variety of weapons and abilities to use, as well as exciting Titan battles. The multiplayer mode is clearly the highlight of this game as the original game is a sole online multiplayer game. As an amateur in first person shooting games, this game does have both solid singleplayer and multiplayer campaigns.

Graphics

Amazing graphics.

The game has excellent graphics, with great looking environments, characters, and Titan models. A lot of the environments have incredible details and design, and it is one of the best looking first person shooter games I  have ever played. No bugs and glitches encountered while playing the game so far.

Sound

Good soundtrack and voice acting.

This game has good voice acting, with some characters have different accents. No weak voice acting moments in the game that I have encountered. The soundtrack is pretty good, especially when fighting the boss Titans in the game. The soundtrack is also pretty, with many fitting tracks that suit different situations such as when fighting Titan boss fights.

Replay Value

Moderate replay value, if you like online multiplayer.

The game has moderate replay value. For singleplayer campaign, you may play it again in harder difficulties or collect the collectibles scattered in each level of the game. You can also play the game's online multiplayer mode as well.

Conclusion

Great and underrated game.

This is a great game, but unfortunately overshadowed by other big budget games such as Battlefield 1 and other games during it's launch month. The game also has underwhelming sales due to it. Regardless, this game is a fun game to play even to a player who like me who rarely plays first person shooter games. The game's excellent controls, graphics, and fun multiplayer mode will attract players to play the game repeatedly. There are also new content released via free updates, which is great. It also has a good singleplayer campaign that can serve as a good tutorial mode for the game's online multiplayer mode. One of my personal favourite games in 2016.
