Bayonetta & Vanquish Review (PS4)

1) Introduction

This is a compilation of remastered versions of Bayonetta and Vanquish, remastered by Armature Studio, developed by PlatinumGames and published by Sega. Both games have updated graphics such as 60fps performance and 1080p support, as wellas new Trophy sets. They can be installed separately as two game applications on your PS4, or you can choose to install only one of them.

2) Bayonetta

Meet Bayonetta, a witch who lost her memories.

This is by far the definitive edition of Bayonetta on PlayStation consoles. Improved visuals, no more screen tearing, improved loading times. This is a pretty good hack-and-slash game, with tons of different weapon combinations, fast paced combat, and good controls.

However, this game still suffers for the mediocre story, not many memorable characters other than Bayonetta, Jeanne and Rodin, as well as frustrating mandatory minigames in game's story. Not to mention, the QTEs can be frustrating as well as most of them will kill you if you do not press the correct button on time.

Replay value is pretty good, roughly the same as average Devil May Cry games' replay value. Worth playing if you like hack-and-slash adventure games.

3) Vanquish

Bash some robots with your suit and different types of firearms.

For Vanquish, the PS4 version looks slightly better than the PS3 version. The in-game graphics look great, but the cutscenes feel kind of choppy as they don't run smoothly compared to playing the game, and they don't look paritcularly great as well. This version also notably includes the Tri-Weapon DLC pack, which includes three new weapons to be used in the game's campaign mode.

Notably, this game still suffers weak story, not many likable characters, and poor replay value. The only additional game modes this game have are the Challenges and playing the game in harder difficulty modes. Still, the gameplay is the great, and it is still one of the finest third person shooter game I have ever played so far, so it is worth playing just for that.

4) Replay Value

Replay value is average for Bayonetta, and pretty low for Vanquish.

There are no new content in this game, as both games are remastered for PS4 without any additional gameplay content. Bayonetta has s standard replay value like many Devil May Cry games, where you can opt to get all Platinum ranks for each chapter, collect all journal entries, complete the game again in harder difficulties, and etc. Vanquish has low replay value, as it only offers Challenge mode as well as harder difficulty modes for the Campaign mode. Of course, both games may have infinite replay value if you enjoy and replay both games a lot.

5) Conclusion

Decent collection of two great games, but no additional content.

This is a decent collection of two great games, but neither games have no additional content, so don't expect too much from that side. As both games still have existing problems such as mediocre story and characters, most likely you will be playing either games solely for the great gameplay itself. Bayonetta is a pretty good and competent hack-and-slash adventure game, whereas Vanquish is an excellent third person shooter game. Both games are worth playing, especially if you are a PlatinumGames fan.

6) Score

8.5/10
